whole child learning
As teachers we are passionate to develop the whole child. Therefore this website has many places where the teacher can find short videos and info, that are meant to develop emotional intelligence, citizenship, wisdom, spiritual strength and more. Teacher's are encouraged to intertwine these concepts in their daily planning.
E.g. I created a few multiplication challenges that I wanted my learners to solve. I chose the theme 'Halloween'
I told the learners that when my youngest daughter, Philline was in the 6th Grade, she wanted to take part in 'Trick or Treating' with her friends. I was very adamant that 'over my dead-body' would she be part of such an unacceptable event. When other children arrived at our door that night I told them that as Christians we do not take part in Halloween. My daughter hid in her room that evening. I told them that years later I found out that Halloween in-fact was initially a Christian celebration.
At this stage my learners had a good idea of the concepts of growth mindset.
I asked them if they thought I was wrong in my actions - most said no!
Then I asked them if they thought I had a growth- or a fixed mindset on this occasion - most said probably fixed.
The children were asked to solve the multiplication challenges in their groups and then for homework, write a paragraph on their personal view of Halloween in their Math Journals. They were encouraged to have a family discussion.
The following day I invited some of the learners to share their ideas on Halloween with us.

- Many said that Halloween is a particularly special time in their community. Especially those who live in complexes - it is a time when parents come together to plan the evening - when the children plan costumes and it seems it often ends in a braai where most of the community get together for a lovely social evening at the end.
- One learner said that his family read that people who were once satanist say that the Halloween period is at the height of the Satanist calendar.
- Another said Halloween makes him very happy as it is one of the few occasions he is allowed sweets.
- We were left with the conclusions that we may have different opinions on something and that is okay, that we might not be sure what our opinion is and that is okay, that we might change our opinion and that too is okay.
